Invest in the Sun!

Why Solar?

Because you can generate your own electricity right from the rooftop of your home. Why use coal or gas generated electricity purchased from a utility company when you can use emission-free energy harvested directly from the sun.

Not only is a solar energy system a great investment, it is also an excellent way to save money on your electric bill. It will also reduce your carbon footprint, increase the appraisal value of your home and help protect you from future electricity rate hikes.

About Us

The Energy Shop opened for business in 1979 as a solar water heater contractor and has since moved into Photovoltaics (Solar Energy). We are locally owned and operated in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. We also distribute other energy saving products such as windows, doors and skylights.

PV Basics

Solar panels generate DC electricity that is fed through electrical conductors to your inverter which inverts the DC electricity into household ready AC electricity. With a grid-tied solar energy system, any extra electricity that is not consumed by the household, is fed back into the grid and is accounted for with a dual flow meter. Your retail electric provider will then buy back this surplus electricity at a predetermined rate.

Solar Tax Credits

The federal ITC was originally established by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and was set to expire at the end of 2007. A series of extensions pushed the expiration date back to the end of 2016, but experts believed that an additional five-year extension would bring the solar industry to its full maturity. Thanks to the spending bill that Congress passed in late December 2015, the tax credit is now available to homeowners in some form through 2021. Here are the specifics:

  • 2016 – 2019: The tax credit remains at 30 percent of the installed cost of the system through 12/31/2019.

  • 2020: The tax credit drops to 26 percent of the cost of the system.

  • 2021: The tax credit drops again to 22 percent of the installed cost of the system.

  • 2022 onwards: Owners of new commercial solar energy systems can deduct 10 percent of the cost of the system from their taxes. There is no federal credit for residential solar energy systems.

Additionally, in previous years, owners of new solar energy systems could not claim the tax credit unless their system was operational. Now, the legislation allows them to claim it as soon as the construction of the system is complete, as long as it is operational by December 31, 2023.

Local Utility Rebates

Here are some of the electric utility companies in North Texas that offer rebates for installing a solar photovoltaic system on the roof of your home: ONCOR, Texas New Mexico Power, CoServ, Denton Municipal Electric and Garland Power & Light.
